      Description

Bai Chaplu Leaves - Fresh Wild Betel Leaves - 100g

Bai Chaplu is a fresh herb that botanically belongs to the pepper family under the Latin name Piper sarmentosum. The plant is also known as wild betel leaves and is an indispensable ingredient in Southeast Asian cuisine, especially in Thai, Vietnamese, and Laotian gastronomy. The leaves are distinctly different from the betel leaves traditionally chewed and are used solely as a culinary herb with a mild, slightly peppery, and freshly aromatic character. The taste is subtle and herbaceous with a slightly spicy undertone, giving dishes a distinctive depth without overpowering other ingredients. The texture is soft and pliable, making the leaves suitable for both raw and cooked applications. One of the most well-known uses is the Thai snack Miang Kham, where the leaves serve as small natural bowls or wraps, filled with ingredients such as lime, chili, ginger, roasted nuts, and a sweet sauce. The leaves can also be finely chopped and added to creamy coconut curries with fish, crab, or seafood, typical of dishes like Gaeng Kua Sapparod and Gaeng Om. In Vietnamese cooking, the leaves are used to wrap seasoned minced beef, which is then grilled, so the heat releases the leaves' perfumed aroma directly into the meat – a dish known as Bò Lá Lốt. The youngest and most tender leaves can also be used raw in Asian salads, where they contribute a fresh and spicy element. The product is delivered in a transparent plastic bag weighing 100 grams, which preserves the leaves' freshness and color. As a fresh vegetable, Bai Chaplu leaves should be stored cool and used shortly after purchase. The leaves are naturally gluten-free and suitable for vegan and vegetarian diets. The product is aimed at food enthusiasts who wish to work with authentic Asian herbs at home, as well as professional chefs interested in Southeast Asian cuisine.
